Hamilton cooling centers open as extreme heat plagues area today

The City of Hamilton announced there are two cooling center options on extreme heat days:

Hamilton Lane Library

300 N. Third St., Hamilton

Hours: 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday

Lane Community Technology Center

228 Court St., Hamilton

10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday

Today will be hot and mostly sunny, with gradually increasing clouds, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington. There will be a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon that will slowly increase overnight.

Highs will be around 99 degrees today, though humidity will push heat index values as high as 102 degrees. Lows will be around 72 degrees overnight.
