Fuel spill contained at golf course

A fuel spill that contaminated some ponds at the Walden Ponds Golf Club on Friday morning has been contained, but the the source of the leak remains unknown, according to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.

The OEPA responded to the club at 6090 Golf Club Lane Friday morning, said Dina Pierce, a spokeswoman for the agency. Fuel could be seen floating on retention ponds in the club, and those ponds are connected to a nearby stream.

Workers successfully contained the spill by placing absorbent booms to clean up the fuel, and cleanup crews are expected to remain on site through Saturday. However, the golf club remained open for business Friday, the club’s general manager, Andy Crum, told our news partners WCPO 9 On Your Side.

“We’re still trying to figure out where the fuel was coming from … it was coming up out of the ground, so it’s not like we can look at a tank and see where it’s leaking,” said Pierce.

The fuel spill resulted in a small fish kill of a few minnows, but Pierce said it was not significant.
