Fire damages Miami University dorm

A fire that damaged the roof of an empty Miami University dormitory today was started after construction crews were working on the gutters, Oxford Fire Department Chief John Detherage said.

“When we got on scene, there was fire coming out of the front corner of the building. From that point we sent a crew in to evaluate the situation and found that we didn’t have a good, clear access to the attic,” Detherage said.

“We ended up accessing the roof from the outside of the building to get the fire put out,” he said.

The damages to the upper floor of Swing Hall, located at 105 Tallawanda Street on Miami’s campus, will require parts of the roof to be replaced, he said.

There were no injuries from the blaze that started around noon today.

“We have a heat and smoke detection system in the buildings and it alerted physical facilities and the police simultaneously,” Wagner said. “Our police alerted the fire department.”

“They did call other departments but it was because of the heat to be safe I think for the firefighters,” Wagner added.

Swing Hall was first constructed in 1924.
