The first fire officer on scene reported fire showing on an outside wall. A large 6-by-8 hole was cut in the wall directly behind the fireplace and the fire was extinguished.
The homeowner had started a fire in the fireplace the night before. A single course of bricks in the back of the fire box was not sound enough to keep the heat from transferring through them to structural components of the home.
“This is a good reminder to Hamilton residents to have their fire places checked by a qualified chimney sweep before starting any wood burning fires in them,” said Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Shaw.
Hamilton fire crews were on scene about an hour, he said.
No injuries to the residents or firefighters were reported.
