But what happened to the woman is still a mystery and an ongoing investigation.
Butler County Sheriff’s detectives are assisting Middletown police who continue to prepare a case to present to a grand jury.
The county coroner’s office identified Bogan but continue to examine the remains to determine how she died. Police are investigating Bogan’ death as a homicide.
SEPT. 23: Police believe Middletown mother was killed in home’s basement
Since Bogan’s death, Sexton, 49, has served a prison sentence for promoting prostitution involving her. Sexton said he last saw Bogan on Sept. 13 getting into a silver Dodge Durango at the corner of Central Avenue and Baltimore Street in downtown. Sexton said he and Bogan had a 9-month-old daughter and were planning to get married.
Middletown police say Sexton and other family members are persons of interest in Bogan’s death.
In July, police searched a residence in the 1500 block of Woodlawn Avenue for evidence in the Bogan case. When they arrived, raw sewage had to be pumped from the basement. A week later the house caught fire. A cause has not yet been found, according to Middletown Fire Chief Paul Lolli.
JULY 18: Grandma: Those responsible for Bogan’s death ‘need to be punished’
Middletown Maj. Mark Hoffman said the investigation has been “frustrating” because many have been less than truthful about tips and some have not come forward.
Hoffman said he does believe those closest to Bogan told the whole truth when she was reported missing. And Sexton changed his statement several times, Hoffman said.
“As the case progressed. We were following leads looking for her in Hamilton and other places. Every alleged citing proved to be false,” Hoffman said, noting they were also getting information that she was dead. At one point, detectives considered search Rumpke after hearing her body had been placed in a Dumpster.
MAY 4: 7 missing persons cases that have captivated the Dayton area
In March, police said the missing persons case had turned into a homicide investigation. Hoffman said there were a combination of reasons for that change. He said a couple of reason were length of time anyone had seen her and the fact that she always checked in with her grandmother and that hadn’t happened for months.
While the coroner is working to determine when Bogan died, police don’t believe she was alive long after she went missing.
“I don’t think she was walking free and the any of the reports were true about her being alive months later,” Hoffman said. “From the moment she was reported, she was beyond our grasp to find alive.”
Opal Bogan, Lindsay’s grandmother, said in some ways the first anniversary of Bogan going missing seems like yesterday.

“But it is also like forever, because it has been going on for so long,” Bogan said.
The 81-year-old woman called her oldest granddaughter a “sweet, beautiful woman.”
“I miss her every day,” Opal Bogan said. “They need to find who killed her, and they need to be punished.”
Bogan also said the daughter Lindsay left behind is “doing well.”
