UPDATE: Police ID man found dead in Hamilton apartment as they arrested shooting suspect

UPDATE @ 4:02 p.m.

Police have identified the man found dead in a Hamilton apartment as conducted an unreleated arrest on Wednesday.

Gregory C. Handley, 66, of 2227 Dixie Highway, Apt. 3, was the man police found to be dead, police said.

INITIAL REPORT, 10:32 a.m.

At the same time Hamilton police served search warrants against 22-year-old Rickardo Harris, the man suspected of last week’s Pet Valu shooting during a robbery, they also found a dead body on Thursday afternoon. Police said the two incidents were unrelated.

Because police believed an effort to arrest Harris could become a dangerous situation, the police SWAT team went to the apartment complex in the 2200 block of Dixie Highway.

Before knocking on the door of the apartment where police believed Harris was, officers knocked on doors of other apartments at the complex to get people out of those dwellings. At one of those apartments, people inside told them there was a man inside who wasn’t moving.

He turned out to be dead, said Sgt. Rich Burkhardt.

“It wasn’t related,” he said.

“The coroner’s office, they don’t think it’s suspicious, or anything like that,” Burkhardt said.

Because the man’s family has not been notified, police were not identifying the man.

In the April 4 afternoon Pet Valu shooting in the 1400 block of Main St., a man was shot in the leg and property was taken from him. Property also was taken from a woman who was not shot.
