On Wednesday, the county dog wardens responded to a residence on Steeplechase Lane in Monroe regarding several 911 calls from multiple witnesses who observed a female, through her glass door, body slamming and punching a black Labrador puppy.

The witnesses also reported they heard the dog howling and yelping in pain until it was motionless and they feared it was dead.

The male dog was seized and is being cared for at Animal Friends Humane Society in Hamilton where it was discovered it had old wounds, including a prior broken leg, hip dysplasia and muscle loss from being caged too long, according to Butler County Sheriff’s Sgt. Kim Peters.

Gabrielle Johnson, 32, was charged with cruelty to a companion, a first-degree misdemeanor.

“Companion animals are just that, companions. You do not mistreat or abuse them and if you do, you will face a judge. It won’t be tolerated,” said Sheriff Richard Jones.
