Indictments have been handed down by a Butler County grand jury against 41 Middletown residents in connection with making methamphetamine.
Detectives investigated seven meth labs in the city over the course of the investigation, and those investigations then led to people who purchased pseudoephedrine, which is commonly found in cold medicine and used to make meth. The people made the purchases in exchange for meth after it was produced in the labs that were found on Rufus Street, Roosevelt Boulevard, Erie Avenue, Catalpa Drive, Wilson Street, Goldman Avenue and Helton Drive, according to police.
Sgt. David Birk of the Middletown Special Operations Unit said detectives spend months following receipts from area drug stores and doing lots of interviews to not only build cases against the meth makers, but also those supplying the goods. In some cases, meth was being traded for heroin, he said.
“We are hoping that people understand they can face felony charges for making a purchase and providing it to people running the labs,” Birk said. “If they know they are facing an F-3 (third-degree felony), they might say they can’t do it.”
Some of those indicted were already in custody, while others were rounded up Wednesday by Middletown police. As of Wednesday afternoon, police were still looking for Mark Streaker, Shannon Graham, David Caron, Jeffery Lee and Madilyn Roe.
The 41 people are charged with various crimes, including illegal manufacturing of methamphetamine, a second-degree felony, and illegal assembly of chemicals used to manufacture methamphetamine, a third-degree felony.
