John Murphy, 47, is in the Middletown City Jail and his preliminary hearing was set for next week in Middletown Municipal Court, according to court records.
Murphy allegedly walked into the store at around 10 a.m. Sunday with a gun and attempted to get inside the cash register, but was unable, according to the report.
An employee of Family Dollar told police she was in the back of the store when she heard someone leaving. She ran to the front door and saw a man wearing a gray sweatshirt hoodie, blue jeans and a bandana running from the store.
Police found a man matching the description of the suspect near Wildwood Road and Enoch Drive just a few blocks away from the store. He was identified as the suspect by the Family Dollar employee.
