FAIRFIELD – With a spark of light and a touch of humor, singer/songwriter and guitarist Sarah Goslee Reed will share a collection of original songs at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30 at the Fairfield Community Arts Center.

As a 20-year veteran artist, she will encourage family fun in the folk tradition by weaving together powerful songs and moving stories, said David Sheldrick, marketing specialist for the City of Fairfield Parks & Recreation.

“With this being a January concert, they are hoping to have a fun night of music, looking toward the warmth of the spring,” Sheldrick said.

“She will tell stories about her family, and growing up. It will be more of an event with storytelling and songs,” he said of the event, which is part of the popular Wine, Women & Song Series.

One of the songs audiences can expect to hear is called “Mystery,” which is about a table,” Goslee Reed said. “It talks about a large table that has been in our family for a long time. We really don’t know much about it before it came to us. I try to imagine how old the table is, which we don’t know, and the size of the tree. There’s a lot of mystery about the table. It was in my Dad’s house for almost 40 years, and then it got passed down to me. Now it’s in my kitchen.”

“Another song I have is called the ‘Katydid Waltz,’ which is about insects and the neat sounds that they make,” she added.

More than 20 years ago, Goslee Reed formed the award-winning duo Prairie Orchid with Lisa Biales. The duo has previously performed at FCAC. As a solo artist, she has released five CDs, including her latest 2012 release, “Plenty.” Many of the songs she will perform are original compositions.

Goslee Reed grew up in Cleveland. Her dad, George Goslee, was the former principal bassoonist with the Cleveland Orchestra. Her CD, “It’s About Time,” is a tribute to her father. George’s bassoon play is also featured on two of her CD’s “Like The Light of the Moon,” and “Cowboy on the Highway.” Sarah and her family currently reside in Mount Vernon, Ohio.

“I think that’s where I got a lot of my musical interest, just from listening. My Mom played the cello, so everybody played an instrument,” she said. “Of course, The Beatles came to town about the time I was a teenager. The Beatles music and the folk music of that era were really big influences on my songs.”

Goslee Reed will be joined by her Firefly Band, which is made up of Tom Martin on bass and piano and Skip Trask on drums.

In addition to singing, songwriting and performing, Goslee Reed has been involved with Camp Nuhop for many years, a camp for children with special needs.

Wine, Women & Song is the FCAC’s is a cabaret-style series, where guests experience an intimate club setting with food and drinks while enjoying the music of renowned women artists, Sheldrick said. Light hors d’oeuvres are complimentary and are available right in the theater with purchase of a ticket and a cash bar will open an hour before show time. Doors will open at 7 p.m.

The “Wine, Women & Song” series will continue on March 20 with Harpeth Rising, a female trio, who will bring Americana bluegrass.
