The biggest – and really, only – health question facing the Cincinnati Bengals for their trip to London was whether left tackle Andrew Whitworth would clear concussion protocol in time to make the flight Thursday night.

But Whitworth was back at practice Thursday afternoon and on the flight later in the evening.

“I kind of felt that was going to be the case all week, and I’m excited for the opportunity to go to London and play the Washington Redskins,” Whitworth said after being listed as limited as a limited participant in practice.

Whitworth suffered the concussion in Sunday’s 31-17 victory against Cleveland. He said his helmet broke on a play when he was only ‘dinged’ and he returned to the game.

The first snap Whitworth missed was after the fourth-quarter run on which running back Jeremy Hill was injured with 14:12 remaining.

“I just had a couple plays there where I probably used the helmet too much on some plays, but it’s not anything abnormal,” Whitworth said. “A lot of football games are that way and sometimes they catch you and sometimes they don’t. This one I just dinged it a little more than usual. It really was never that severe, but once you say that you’re a little dinged you have to go into the system.”

Whitworth sat out two plays and returned to the game. He later reported to a trainer that he felt a little nauseous but had no other symptoms. He continued to play until the Browns called a timeout with 5:02 remaining, at which point a trainer came into the huddle during the stoppage of play and pulled Whitworth from the remainder of the game.

“It’s a joint process,” Whitworth said. “The doctor has to be honest with you. You’ve got to be honest with the doctor. The reality is, any guy can lie about how they feel one way or the other, to play or to not play. Something’s really wrong or it’s not. So there’s a lot of trust in that process.”

“That’s why it’s important that the guy’s an independent neurologist,” he added. “I don’t want him to have stake in what’s most important for the Bengals. I want him to have what’s most important for me. I think that’s why this has been a great addition to this.”

Whitworth said he was kept informed of the process from the time he left the game Sunday until he was cleared to practice Thursday.

“My main thing just trying to get back to normal and then be there for your team,” he said. “You want to take it serious,” Whitworth said. “It’s important to handle it the right way and I think it has been.”
