Ohio State holds off Minnesota for another Big Ten victory

The Golden Gophers (3-3, 0-3) had a chance to make it a one-score game with 5:45, but Emmit Carpenter missed a 49-yard field goal.

His second miss of the half left Minnesota down two scores (23-14), and Ohio State promptly put the game away on the ensuing possession.

Dwayne Haskins drove the third-ranked Buckeyes 69 yards in seven plays, hitting K.J. Hill down the middle for a 27-yard touchdown with 2:15 to put the game out of reach.

Haskins and Hill both had huge days.

The OSU signal-caller completed 33 of 44 passes for 412 yards, becoming the first Ohio State quarterback with a pair of 400-yard passing games to his credit.

Hill had 187 yards on nine catches. He caught two of Haskins’ three TDs. The first was a spectacular one-handed 36-yarder in the first half that gave Ohio State the lead for good.

HALFTIME RECAP

Ohio State leads Minnesota 17-14 after a back-and-forth first half at Ohio Stadium.

K.J. Hill made a spectacular one-handed catch on his way to a 36-yard touchdown catch from Dwayne Haskins to put the Buckeyes on top with 3:59 left in the quarter.

Haskins also connected with Terry McLaurin for a 41-yard touchdown and engineered an 83-yard drive that resulted in a field goal to account for Ohio State’s points.

Haskins was 20-for-26 passing in the first half for 237 yards while Minnesota’s Zack Annexstad went 8-for-12 for 110 yards and an interception.

The Golden Gophers had a pair of long scoring drives but were hurt by a pair of turnovers.

They controlled the line of scrimmage for most of the first half, opening up holes for Mohamed Ibrahim to run for 105 yards on 14 carries. He scored two touchdowns.
