Ohio State Football: Pair of Buckeyes selected in the second round of the NFL Draft

Three more were taken in the third round

Ohio State got on the board in the second night of the NFL Draft with the selection of Pete Werner.

The New Orleans Saints used the 28th pick (60th overall) on Werner, a three-year starter at linebacker for the Buckeyes.

Two picks later, the Green Bay Packers chose offensive lineman Josh Myers, a two-year starter at center for the Buckeyes.

Wyatt Davis became the fourth Ohio State player taken in this draft when the Minnesota Vikings chose him with the No. 23 pick in the third round.

Davis was a two-year starter for the Buckeyes and a two-time All-American.

The 2020 Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year helped the Buckeyes average 256.9 yards per game last season and 266.8 yards per game in 2019.

Two picks after Davis, the 49ers chose Trey Sermon, a running back who finished his career at Ohio State after starting at Oklahoma.

Sermon ran for 870 yards last season, including an Ohio State record 331 against Northwestern in the Big Ten Championships game.

He is the 11th Ohio State player to be drafted by San Francisco. The last was Nick Bosa, the No. 2 overall pick in 2019.

Davis is the 13th Ohio State player to be drafted by the Vikings, who took Pat Elflein and Jalyn Holmes in 2017 and ’18. Elflein is also an offensive lineman taken in the third round while Holmes is a defensive end chosen in the fourth round.

With the last pick of the third round, Ohio State’s Baron Browning was selected by the Denver Broncos.

A five-star recruit who played multiple linebacker spots, Browning had 110 tackles, including 18 for loss and seven sacks, for the Buckeyes.

He is the 11th Ohio State player picked by the Broncos, who also used third round picks on Dre’Mont Jones (2019), Jeff Heuerman (2015), Maurice Clarett (2005) and Mike Current (1967).

The first player from Ohio State drafted in 2021 was Justin Fields, who went to the Chicago Bears with the 11th pick in the first round on Thursday night.

Werner is the 16th Ohio State player drafted by the Saints and the fourth since 2016. They picked safety Vonn Bell and receiver Michael Thomas in the second round in 2016 and used the 11th overall pick on cornerback Marshon Lattimore in 2017.

Myers is the 25th Ohio State player drafted by the Packers and the first since fellow center Corey Linsley was a fifth-round pick in 2014.

Merle Wendt, an All-American end, was the first Buckeye drafted by the Packers when they chose him in the sixth round in 1937.
