Hodges carded a 5-under par 64 in the final round, giving him a two-day total of 134, six strokes ahead of tournament runner-up Ron Nichting.
For Hodges, it was a hot start that put him on track to the championship.
“I birdied five out of the first six holes, so I was 5-under after six holes,” Hodges said. “I kind of cooled off a little bit after that, but definitely starting out that good set the tone for the round.”
Hodges didn’t let up off the gas from there.
“I kept the same mentality throughout the whole round,” he said. “I tried to hit the best shot I could and just tried to make as many birdies as I could.”
For Hodges, a Hamilton High School and Xavier University graduate, winning both the city championship and the Potter Park Club championship this year has special significance due to a recent hiatus from tournament play because of other commitments.
“It feels good,” he said. “I used to play a lot of golf tournaments when I was in high school and college. But the past couple of years, because of work-related stuff, I really haven’t played in tournaments so it’s good to come out.
“I definitely miss the competition, so to be able to come out and play that well and win the two that (I) played in here, it’s a good feeling.”
Rounding out the top five on the championship flight leaderboard was first-round leader Mike Smith, who a carded a two-round total of 140. He was followed by Marvin Flynn with 141, and Brad Meiner and Jerry Leshner with 142.
Ryan Wilson finished first for tournament’s second flight of golfers, while Bobby Goodpaster finished first in the tournament’s third flight.
