Robinson nets career-high 37, HHS rolls Bombers

Ryan Robinson is the offensive leader in the Greater Miami Conference, so scoring isn’t foreign to the Hamilton High School senior guard.

Saturday night against St. Xavier, Robinson took it to a whole new level.

Robinson poured in 17 of his game-high 37 points in the pivotal third quarter as the Big Blue rolled the Bombers 69-55 at the Hamilton Athletic Center.

The points were a career high for Robinson, who nailed five 3-pointers. Robinson, who was 12 of 16 from the field, is 22 points shy of 1,000 for his career.

“I really wasn’t thinking. I was just playing,” Robinson said. “The guys did a good job of getting me the ball. I just felt good all night. What was most important is we lost a tough game last Tuesday and got two wins this weekend.”

HHS senior A’Shon Riggins also had a big night. The senior guard dished out seven assists, leaving him three shy of Tim Robinson’s all-time Hamilton total (281).

Riggins also scored 10 points, leaving him 21 shy of 1,000 for his career.

“(Robinson), that is one of the best individual performances I have ever seen,” HHS coach Sean Van Winkle said. “And Riggins, his last five games have been great. His leadership and decision making have been great.”

HHS and the Bombers battled to a 14-all tie after the first quarter and neither team could gain an advantage in the second, the half ending with the Big Blue leading 36-35.

A close game in the third found HHS leading 44-40 before the Big Blue rattled off the next 13 points to gain a 57-40 lead.

HHS hit 12 of 17 from the field in the first half, then 8 of 10 in the third quarter. The Big Blue finished 24 of 37, but went 14 of 25 from the foul line.

The Bombers hit 12 of 21 in the first half but went ice cold in the second half, managing 20 points on 7 of 27 shooting.

Henry Kuechly led the Bombers with 18 points. Johnny Bubenhofer added 12 and Bobby Jefferson scored 10.

Hamilton improved to 8-10. The Big Blue, who haven’t won more than eight games in a season since 2007, will shoot for win No. 9 on Tuesday when they head to GMC-leading Maon.

The Bombers, who fell to 5-13, will host La Salle on Friday.
