Assistant boys basketball coach promoted at Edgewood

TRENTON — Edgewood High School has a new boys basketball coach.

Aaron Horne, a varsity assistant for the Cougars for the last two seasons, was introduced as the new head coach on Friday.

Horne, a 2002 Fairfield graduate, replaces Scott Mueller, who did not have his contract renewed after guiding the Cougars to a 4-17 record in his first season.

“This is very exciting,” said Horne, who received a round of applause from the Edgewood players after he was introduced. “I always hoped for this opportunity. I’ve been fortunate to work with some people who have shaped me as a coach and a person.”

Horne is a high school math teacher at Edgewood. He joined the faculty in 2006 after graduating from Miami University. He was the boys freshman coach in 2007 and 2008 before becoming the varsity assistant coach.

“We had a little disappointment last season,” Horne said. “So now we are going to be about building some confidence as we move forward.

“There is plenty of talent here,” he continued. “I’ve got big hopes and dreams and I’m just eager to get started.”

District Director of Athletics and Communication John Thomas said Horne was the only one of the 32 applicants he interviewed.

“It became clear to me in the interview that it was time for him to lead Edgewood basketball,” said Thomas, who was the boys head coach when Horne joined the staff. “What was clear when we talked was that we share a lot of the same philosophies. I’m very excited for Aaron to get started.”

Many of the players seemed excited as well.

“I think this is great,” sophomore Cody Hall said. “I hoped he would get the job. Now I’m excited to get the season started.”

The announcement of Horne as the new basketball coach also puts to end a stressful month in Edgewood athletics.

Both Mueller and veteran football coach Steve Channell were non-renewed in early March.

Edgewood named Phil Mauro as its new football coach earlier this week.

“It feels good for everything to be settled,” said Hall, who also plays football. “Now we just have to get going in a new direction.”
