Cox, Prohaska take top honors on Journal-News All-Area hoop teams

Jarrett Cox and Abby Prohaska are repeat headliners on the 2017-18 Journal-News All-Area prep basketball teams.

Cox, a Lakota East senior guard, has earned his second straight Player of the Year award on the boys side. Prohaska, a Lakota West senior wing, is the top female player for the second consecutive season.

Both are 1,000-point scorers, and the Greater Miami Conference standouts will continue their careers at the collegiate level — Cox at Fairmont State University and Prohaska at the University of Notre Dame.

The local Coaches of the Year are at both ends of the experience spectrum.

David Lane of Ross is the boys winner, having directed a major turnaround at Ross in his first year as a head coach. The Rams went 15-8 this season after the program endured a 22-69 record in the previous four years.

John Rossi of Franklin is the girls winner. This was his first year with the Wildcats, but his 20th head coaching season.

Franklin went 19-7 and captured its first-ever Division II district championship. Rossi is closing in on 300 career wins — his overall record is 295-170.
