West Chester woman accused of abandoning emaciated dog at shelter

A West Chester Twp. woman has been charged with animal cruelty after she allegedly abandoned her emaciated dog.

Arlene Dynell McKinnon, 39, has been charged with cruelty to a companion animal, a first-degree misdemeanor. She allegedly dumped her pet, who was “emaciated, covered in sores and filthy” at the Sharonville animal shelter.

The Hamilton County dog warden tipped off the Butler County dog wardens, who were able to locate and interview the owner. She told them she dumped the caged dog off at the SPCA outside entry way. She stated she owned the dog for several months, and it stayed in a cage due to her busy schedule.

“This is happening way too often in our county where people think starving a dog is better than reaching out for help,” Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones said. “I will continue to hold people accountable for these disgusting actions against defenseless animals.”

The dog is receiving 24-hour care. The sheriff’s office said it is not sure whether the dog will survive.
