A local ice cream favorite is set to get its first taste of nationwide exposure with the filming of a segment for a cable television program.

The Cone will open for several hours starting at 12:30 p.m. Sunday to film a segment for Travel Channel show “Bert the Conqueror,” which will film at the site between approximately 2:15 and 2:45 p.m.

That will allow customers of the soft-serve ice cream, yogurt and shaved ice stand at 6855 Tylersville Road to be part of the filming or just turn out for some desserts they typically wouldn't get to enjoy again until The Cone officially reopens in the spring.

Ice cream and other desserts will be available for most of the afternoon, depending on when The Cone runs out of product, according to owner Keith Wren.

Walk-up windows, dining room, game room and kiddie rides will be open, as well as the drive thru.

While the 20-year-old business has been featured on a PBS documentary and in the background of a “Shipping Wars” episode filmed next door, Sunday’s filming marks the first national exposure for the West Chester icon.

“I’m kind of honored because there’s obviously some other people they could have called, and they chose us for whatever reason,” he said.

The shoot will be part of an episode in the third season of “Bert the Conqueror,” which will tentatively air in 2016, according to the network.

The program showcases the fun and ingenious side of America, with host Bert Kreischer scouring the country “to take on the most exciting rides and challenges, throwing himself into everything with a smile, a laugh and a scream,” according to a description of the show.

There will be no daring activities for this particular shoot. Each episode features a few local stops along the way in between Kreischer’s activities, and The Cone will be one of them.

The Cone will donate 25 percent of Sunday's proceeds to the Wounded Warrior Project and another 25 percent to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Wren said.

“It’s not a day for us to make money,” Wren said. “It’s just a day for us to give back and have exposure, because we’re not going to make anything based on bringing in the crew for several days to get ready, and it will take us even longer to get it shut down after we’re done.”

A limited menu will be offered, including orange-and-vanilla, chocolate-and-vanilla, Cone-made pumpkin and Cone-made peanut butter ice creams, hot fudge sundaes, Buckeye parfaits, shaved ice, pumpkin pie wizzards, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup wizzards, Oreo wizzards, Butterfinger wizzards, Kit Kat wizzards and Heath wizzards.

The Cone also will offer cake and waffle cones and rainbow or chocolate sprinkles.

Wren expects that the off-season opening to draw a crowd, largely based on social media efforts to publicize the one-day opening.

“We have 8,000 Facebook people and those 8,000 have reached out to over 40,000,” he said. “That’s the biggest number we’ve ever seen.”
