Trailer full of scrap metal stolen from Hamilton church

A black trailer filled with more than 1 ton of scrap metal was recently stolen from the Saint Clair Avenue Baptist Church in Hamilton.

The trailer was last seen Oct. 9 in the church’s parking lot, according to church officials. It contained copper piping, six electric motors and an old boiler inside that the church had saved in hopes of scrapping.

The value of the scrap metal — about $400, according to the church — was going to help pay for operating expenses.

“I’m kind of disgusted somebody drove up, hitched up our trailers and left because we help people with things and that seemed like a real affront to do that,” said Donald Dewey, Senior Pastor of the church. “But on the flip side of that, we’re in the business of forgiving and helping. There’s nothing served when you get angry.”

Dewey, who has been the pastor at Saint Clair Avenue Baptist Church for six years, said he has never had anyone steal anything from the church.

He said he’s not angry that someone stole the trailer, but he hopes they get help.

“This reminds me we’re here to be a light in a dark world,” Dewey said. “The world is dark. A lot of people do wrong things, but we’re suppose to be forgiving, so we don’t hold any ill will.”

But, Dewey said, “We would like the trailer back.”

The black trailer is six feet tall, six feet wide and 12 feet long.
