‘These attacks’

I am more than a little concerned about what impact Senate Bill 5 will have on my family and other families in this community.

My daughter currently receives a quality education from teachers who focus on what they do best: Teaching. SB 5 would change all of that.

Collective bargaining, in its current state, allows educators a say in how to improve learning opportunities for all the other K-12 students in Ohio. Teachers currently have a voice when it comes to resources and improving teaching and learning conditions. SB 5 would change this.

For these reasons, as a parent, I cannot support this bill. My husband is in his second semester of a teacher-training program. His love for mathematics made a choice in major easy: Mathematics education. He was inspired by our nation’s leaders calling for the U.S. to beef up in the areas of mathematics. He felt his passion for the subject area could indeed make an impact on individuals and eventually a nation as a whole.

Since the introduction of SB 5, talk of becoming an engineer or some other professional in the field of math and science has emerged.

Where is the compassion and understanding for those who work in the field of education? These attacks on unions and the rights of public workers are deterring hard-working, intelligent people from entering the field of education.

As the wife of a future teacher (if he doesn’t change his mind), I cannot support this bill. This is my first year of teaching in Ohio. I moved here with almost a decade of experience to share with my students. I was attracted to the job because of the competitive salary, competitive benefits and the desire to make an impact on the community.

If SB 5 becomes a reality, what will attract seasoned, quality teachers to this area? What will Ohio’s educational system have to offer their students? The bottom line is the kids.

Nothing is more essential than giving our children a quality education. So, as a teacher, I cannot support this bill. I hope you will join me.
