Talawanda voters return incumbent and put newcomer on school board

Voters in the Talawanda school district elected a newcomer and an incumbent to its governing school board Tuesday.

First-time school board candidate Patrick Meade was the top vote-earner with 32 percent of the electorate, followed by incumbent Mary Jane Roberts with 25 percent, according to unofficial results from the Butler County Board of Elections.

The Talawanda school system includes the city of Oxford.

Meade, a former teacher with the district, had previously told the Journal-News that like many other area school board candidates he as problems with Ohio’s mandated student testing.

“I am in favor of high standards and accountability if students are given the resources and support to meet those standards. I do not think, however, that we need to spend so much of our students’ time taking tests instead of learning,” said Meade.
