A retired Franklin police officer was remembered by a colleague as a person who never had a bad thing to say about anybody.

That’s how William J. “Bill” Brumfield was remembered as he was laid to rest June 2 with police honors.

Brumfield, 63, of Franklin, served as a Franklin police officer, died on May 26 for 24 years before retiring in 2011.

“The first call I ever took (as a police officer) was with Bill on a detail in Harrison Addition on foot patrol,” said Lt. Gerry Massey. “He was a good man and a good father. He never had a bad thing to say about anyone, even if someone did something wrong.”

Massey said, “he always knew he’d do what it took to help another officer.”

Massey said Brumfield’s last call was working with another officer to serve a warrant when he climbed a fence and slipped injuring his shoulder and back.

Police Chief Russ Whitman said Brumfield served under of the city’s police chiefs. Brumfield was appointed as a reserve officer on Nov. 13, 1986 and was appointed a full-time patrolman May 24, 1987.

During his career with Franklin police, Brumfield served as a patrol officer, evidence technician, canine officer, BAC officer, warrant officer, court security officer, and property room officer. He also received several commendations for his service.
