Residents asked to search property for rifle used in shooting

The Warren County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents in the Landen area that the AK 47 assault rifle used in the shooting of a deputy and another person Thursday night may be on their property.

During Thursday’s incident involving the attempted murder of a Warren County deputy sheriff and the shooting of another person, the suspect discarded the weapon he used in committing his alleged crimes.

The sheriff’s office said it is unknown if this rifle is still loaded with ammunition and is asking the public to be aware of this and to look out for any suspicious items in and around their homes. Deputies say the rifle could be concealed in a piece of clothing or just tossed in a flower bed or wooded area and are asking residents to check around their homes or unlocked sheds for the missing rifle.

If anyone locates the rifle, they are asked to contact the Warren County Sheriff’s Office at 513-695-1289.

The shooting of Deputy Katie Barnes and another person were shot Thursday night as Barnes was responding to a domestic situation at 8225 Jonathan Lane in the Orchard of Landen apartment complex. Mohammed Abdu Laghaoui, 19, allegedly shot Barnes in the abdomen, shot his father in the hand and fired two shots at a neighbor. Barnes was taken for medical treatment and was released.

He fled the apartments on foot that prompted a lockdown of the Landen Lake community for a seven-hour manhunt until Laghaoui was arrested “without incident” after returning on his own to the apartment about 4:30 a.m., according to Sheriff Larry Sims. More than 50 cruisers from many area departments, along with helicopters and police dogs were used in the manhunt in a neighborhood with woods and a number of trails.

Laghaoui is being held in the Warren County Jail held on $2 million bond, while awaiting arraignment Monday morning in Mason Municipal Court on charges of attempted aggravated murder, attempted murder and felonious assault.

Friday’s wet weather did not deter law enforcement officers scoured the area around Landen Lake searching for the gun that was reported tossed in the lake. No gun had been reported found late Friday. State Watercraft Officers trolled the lake searching for the weapon and later Deerfield Twp. firefighters were stretched out with a line searching the bottom of the shallow lake hoping to find the long gun. When that failed, a dive team was sent in to continue the search. That was also unsuccessful.
