Tom Capobianco, regional manager, said the fitness industry is transitioning to smaller box, group-style training that combines a community-social aspect with “modalities that actually work.”
“After being a trainer for 25 years, it was hard to find a model that was really appropriate and cost effective for the general fitness client, and this one is,” said Capobianco, a former vice president for LA Fitness who has been building fitness businesses for the last 15 years.
The 60-minute, heart-rate monitored interval training concept aims to help members lose weight, get toned and meet overall fitness goals in a short amount of time, he said.
Participants burn from 500 to 1,000 calories per 60-minute training session, using a variety of equipment including treadmills, rowing machines, TRX suspension training and free weights.
Orangetheory Fitness, which launched its first studio in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in 2010, now includes more than 250 studios in the United States, Canada and United Kingdom.
The fitness franchise is on track to open 600 studios by 2017.
Capobianco said Orangetheory is “a great model” for both everyday fitness clients and athletes.
“There’s a very real drive toward providing a tremendous customer experience from the time you walk into the door, the studios themselves, the cleanliness of the studio, the quality of the instructor,” he said. “The trainers often have degrees in multiple certifications.”
Orangetheory Fitness is scheduled to open in late February or early March.
