Middletown police obtain warrant for truck’s surveillance video in fatal crash

Middletown police have obtained a search warrant to view video of a fatal crash that occurred Monday at the corner of Verity Parkway and Lafayette Avenue.

Police investigated the crash that killed Teresa Day, 63, of Middletown, and one of the drivers told them he ran a red light while traveling north on Verity and Lafayette. The American Tire Distributors box truck struck Day’s Ford Fusion and pushed the vehicle into a semi truck that was stopped at the red light, according to police.

Day was taken to Atrium Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead Monday afternoon. This was the county’s first fatal crash of 2020. No one else was injured, police said.

The box truck was equipped with surveillance video and belonged to ATD, according to the search warrant obtained by the Journal-News. When Detective Brook McDonald contacted the company, located in North Carolina, he was told it would not release video footage of the traffic crash without a search warrant.

Police are hoping the video can “support or disprove” the statements of the driver, according to the search warrant. No charges have been filed and the investigation is continuing.
