Middletown nursing facility plans $1M expansion

A Middletown assisted living facility on Towne Boulevard has plans to add 20 new apartments for a total 81, an approximately $1.3 million expansion project, said executive director Charlene Himes.

Spring Hills Middletown Assisted Living and Memory Care currently has 61 apartments. Construction on the new units is expected to start this week, with the additional living spaces opening early 2015.

The center, which as about 65 full- and part-time employees, offers 24-hour nursing and personal care to residents.

“I believe there is a great need for quality assisted living services,” Himes said. “The senior population is growing at such a rapid rate. There has to be viable living options to support them.”

The Middletown assisted living facility opened in 2000. It was purchased by Spring Hills Senior Communities in 2004.

“We take residents who are age 62 and over and they can have various levels of dependence and ability. We offer a range of services from basic to heavy custodial care,” Himes said.

Patients typically stay for two years.

Spring Hills Middletown has also received a Caring Stars award from Caring.com.

The award was announced on January 28 and measures commentary and reviews submitted to the Caring.com website. The top 1 percent of assisted living and memory care communities nationwide is identified each year.

• Three or more reviews during the time frame, at least one of which with the highest rating of five stars;

• An average overall rating (across all reviews on their listing) equaling greater than 4 stars; and

• No unresolved negative reviews.

The Caring Stars awards program was founded in 2012.
