Middletown mom charged after children, ages 2 and 3, found in street

A Middletown mother is charged with child endangering after two of her young children were found shoeless in the middle of Charles and Jefferson streets Sunday night.

A woman told police she found the children, a 3-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl, in the street and she had to use her brakes to avoid hitting them.

She tried to find where the children lived for a few minutes, then called police, according to a police report.

Before police arrived, the complainant saw a woman, later identified as Korie Roberts walking in the area and asked if she lost her two children.

Roberts, 21, of the 700 block of Charles Street, told Middletown police she left her children asleep and walked to a nearby fast-food restaurant.

While interviewing Roberts in her home, police found the front door handle didn’t work and the door was secured by a dead bolt. The door was easily opened from the inside, the report said.

Police also smelled gas near the gas store and there were no beds in the apartment; only couches.

Police called Butler County Children Services and learned there was a similar call from July 2016 when Roberts left her children alone.

After the investigation, the children were removed from the home and placed with a relative, according to police.

Roberts will have a pre-trial hearing next month in Middletown Municipal Court, according to court documents. She has been released from jail.
