A family-owned Hamilton business with more than five-decades of service is closing its doors.

Day’s Towing & Auto Repair, 1275 Main Street, shut down the Sunoco service station and auto repair divisions this week. The towing section is expected to close within a week, according to John Leece, of Hamilton, a friend and former employee who is helping ownership wind down its operations.

The late Bob Day opened the business in 1963 and his son, Mike Day, became owner about 16 years ago, Leece said.

But with Mike Day in the hospital to be treated for an undisclosed illness, the long-term future of the business depends on his recovery, he said.

“It always had a lot of regular customers and it’s a shame,” Leece said. “The place had been around so long and everyone in Hamilton knows about it. I probably get about 30 phone calls a day asking about Mike and the business.”

“It’s really rough on everybody,” he said.

In 2010, Mike Day pleaded guilty to charges for failure to remit sales taxes and also pleaded guilty on behalf of his business to a charge of grand theft. As part of a plea deal, the felony counts were reduced to misdemeanors.
