Workplace safety hot topic at Red Cross presentation

Local chapter teams up with Grainger in Fairfield for product demonstrations and discussions.

FAIRFIELD — Local businesses gathered Wednesday, May 5, to take a stand against workplace-related injuries.

In honor of North American Occupational Health and Safety Week, Grainger Inc.’s Fairfield branch and the American Red Cross Cincinnati Chapter hosted a discussion and demonstrations on workplace safety. The event was held at Grainger, 8700 Le Saint Drive, Fairfield.

Attendees were offered product demonstrations from more than 20 vendors to learn how to properly use equipment and safety gear while on the job.

Grainger also discussed personal protection equipment, such as eye, hand and ear protection, said Kelsey O’Kane, company spokeswoman.

“As it relates to safety, businesses need to have a plan in place that will help prevent workplace accidents while improving productivity, protecting employees and driving down costs associated with accidents,” said Frank Grasso, regional program manager for safety at Grainger.

According to the National Safety Council, a work-related injury costs employers roughly $38,000. And on average, 5,214 workers killed on the job each year and 4.6 million reportedly injured, according to the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

About 250 local businesses attended the event. The Grainger Foundation also made a $10,000 donation to the local Red Cross for educational programs.

Grainger offers a broad line of maintenance, repair and operating products across the U.S. as well as Asia and Latin America.
