Woman killed by tree ‘not a kid you would forget,' former coach says

Visitation for 2005 Fairfield High School grad Meredith Wilkie will be Monday.

FAIRFIELD TWP. — Funeral services for Meredith Wilkie, a 2005 Fairfield High School graduate who died Wednesday when a tree uprooted during a storm and fell across her tent, has been scheduled for early next week.

Wilkie, 24, of Fairfield Twp., was camping in Shawnee State Forest in southern Ohio when a 70-foot red oak uprooted and fell across the tent while she was inside. She was camping with a friend, who had gone outside the tent to inspect a cracking noise, at the time of the accident. He was not injured.

Wilkie played soccer for four years for Fairfield High School, said Mark Wineberg, retired soccer coach.

“She just played very intelligently. She was very quiet — very serious on the field. But off the field, she was relaxed and just a very fun kid. She cracked us up,” he said. “She’s not a kid you would forget.”

Wilkie also played the clarinet in the woodwind ensemble, and was an avid runner, bicyclist and knitter, according to her obituary.

After graduating from Ohio State University with a degree in journalism, she was pursuing her master’s degree in library science from the University of Pittsburgh. Currently, she was living in Columbus, where she was working at a law firm as an assistant librarian in its law library.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Avance Funeral Home, 4976 Winton Road. Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
