School board picks Nuss to fill vacancy

Selection follows resignation of Sharon Ko.

FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield Board of Education Thursday night filled its vacancy created by Sharon Ko’s resignation, but in the eyes of some in the community, the issues surrounding her departure aren’t over.

After Don Nuss Jr. was appointed as the new school board member, community members called for the current bus contract to be revoked and board members Mark Morris and Dan Murray to resign immediately.

While board President Jerome Kearns said the board will consult with its legal counsel to review the busing contract, Morris and Murray were adamant they are not resigning and encouraged the community to support the district as it moves forward.

Nuss, 51, was one of three finalists interviewed during an executive session, and was sworn in prior to the start of the regular meeting in front of a capacity crowd in the Catherine D. Milligan Community Room.

“I want to thank the board for having the confidence in me,” said Nuss, the regional environmental manager at Stericycle Inc. “I’ve been in the school district for 24 years and I’ve wanted to get involved for a long time. ... I’m not going to let you down. I’ll roll up my sleeves and make this work.”

Ko resigned on Aug. 25 after prosecutors investigating a campaign finance crime found she had knowledge of a businessman’s secret funneling of cash to her campaign through the group Moms on a Mission.

The bus maintenance contract was signed in 2009 for $1.5 million with Tom Burer’s company. Burer pleaded guilty last week to a third-degree felony of secretly funneling approximately $26,000 in campaign funds to the Moms group through family members and employees of his company.

The money was then given to Ko — who knew the money was coming from Burer — as well as Murray and Morris. Murray and Morris each received $5,355 worth of in-kind contributions in the form of fliers that were sent out supporting the candidates, who ran for election together as the “Three Good Apples.”
