2 rallies this weekend support Butler County mom facing deportation

Two rallies this weekend are planned to show support for Maribel Trujillo Diaz, a Fairfield woman in the country illegally and set to be deported.

The Mexican mother of four is seeking amnesty because she said her brother and father have been kidnapped by drug cartels in Mexico.

A pro-immigrant rally, billed as All Humans Rally, will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday in Hamilton. Though the event was planned before Trujillo was detained by federal immigration officials, the incident “puts the reason for this rally into sharp focus,” said one of its organizers, Michaela Little.

The rally will take place at 345 High St. in Hamilton.

The All Humans Rally was created by three individuals who, as part of local grassroots groups including United We Stand and Indivisible, want to combat the notion that Butler County is not welcoming toward immigrants, organizers said.

“We judge ourselves as a community by the way we treat the most vulnerable among us. We promote just civil laws for the common good while respecting the dignity and human rights of all in our community, documented or not,” Little said.

On Sunday, people of all faiths are invited to join a “Mercy for Maribel” prayer service in Hamilton.

Participants will gather at St. Joseph Church, 171 Washington St., at 2 p.m. From there, they will pray the rosary in a procession from the church to the Butler County Jail, about a 10-minute walk away.

The event is being organized by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, which includes almost 500,000 Catholics. The 19-county territory includes 211 parishes.
