COMPLETE CORONAVIRUS COVERAGE

Where do you Work: Mercy Health-Springfield Regional Medical Center Emergency Department

Describe what your day is like/what you do: There is no typical day in the ER. It's usually all hands on deck as soon as you clock in for the day. We quickly triage and assess patient symptoms to get them the most appropriate care in a timely manner. Our patients range from minor illnesses to major life-threatening injuries and illnesses. The teamwork provided inside those doors between all staff members is phenomenal, and we strive to give each patient compassionate care.

What inspired you to get into health care? When I was younger my mother was sick and spent a lot of time (years) in and out of the hospital. She frequented the Emergency Room, Oncology floor and ICU during her many stays. I constantly had first-hand experiences with health care staff and the hospital. They were so kind and compassionate to my mother and family. By the end of her illness some of the nurses were even teaching me all of the machines and equipment being used to help my mom. From that time on, I knew I wanted to grow up and offer patients and families that same level of care and compassion that was shown during my families toughest of days.

Health Care Hero: ‘I became a nurse to make a difference’

What's a memorable experience you've had in health care? I was involved in the care of a trauma patient who had sustained a life-threatening injury. We were only in our trauma room about 20 minutes from arrival to OR and I hadn't felt as though my role was very significant. However a few days later, my trauma coordinator came to find me and and let me know that the patient had talked about me and how calming and helpful I was for him in those moments leading up to surgery. I had simply done the job in which I do every day, but to that patient I had done everything he needed of me.

What do you want readers to know about your job right now? Despite COVID-19 we are here to treat you and help you feel better. We are taking the proper precautions to keep not only ourselves safe but also every patient that walks though our doors seeking treatment. We commit to doing this job because it's not just a job but who we are.
