Hamilton third-grader killed in Cincinnati weekend shooting

A third-grader from a Hamilton elementary school has been identified as the victim of a weekend shooting in a Greater Cincinnati neighborhood.

Chance Gilbert, 8, of Riverview Elementary died of a gunshot wound Sunday, according to our news partner WCPO-TV.

Cincinnati Police District 5 officers responded to the 4800 block of Hawaiian Terrace in Mt. Airy in Hamilton County Sunday afternoon. Officers found Gilbert with a fatal gunshot wound, according to Police Captain Craig Gregoire.

“I don’t have any details of the investigation,” Gregoire told WCPO. “This is unfolding. I want to say that our hearts and our prayers are out with the family. This was a very tragic day for all and we’re trying to get to the bottom of this.”

The CPD homicide unit is currently investigating what happened, but police have not confirmed whether the shooting was intentional, nor have they identified any suspects or made any arrests, according to officers on the scene.

Joni Copas, spokeswoman for Hamilton Schools, said the death of Gilbert has saddened the school system.

“The district is heartbroken over the sad news of the passing of Chance. We send our love and support to his family and hope they find peace and comfort during this difficult time,” said Copas.

“Even in his young life, he has left a mark with his vibrant personality and will be sorely missed by our school community.”
