“On arrival, crews noted heavy smoke from the front entry door to the residence. The male occupant was attempting to extinguish the fire with a garden hose on our arrival,” Centers said. “Crews made entry and quickly knocked down the fire, which originated in a multi-purpose room. Heavy damage was noted in the room of origin, with smoke damage throughout the residence.”
Centers said he was not able to release the name of the male occupant who was transported to a local hospital in serious condition with smoke inhalation. A female, also not identified, was transported in stable condition.
“The cause of the fire was electrical, originating in a multiplug adaptor which investigators believe was overloaded,” Centers said. “Monroe was assisted by Middletown, Liberty, and Fairfield Township fire departments. There were no injuries to firefighters and crews remained on the scene for approximately two hours.”
There were no functioning smoke detectors located in the residence, according to Centers, who added, “We are practically begging our residents to make sure they have these inexpensive items in their homes. If you buy them, we will install them. If you can’t afford them, we will provide them. We will change batteries, and assist in any way possible to make sure your family is safe.”
