Former standout high school basketball player Grevey dies

Father of six served as president of county bar association.

HAMILTON — To truly appreciate Norman Grevey, you only have to look at his children, said Larry Allen, former boys basketball coach at Hamilton High School.

“He had a great family and that’s a reflection of him,” Allen said of Mr. Grevey, 79, who died Saturday, Jan. 30. “Like they say, ‘The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.’”

Mr. Grevey, a standout high school basketball player, had six children, sons Kevin Grevey of Great Falls, Va.; Bryan Grevey of Charleston, S.C.; Scott Grevey of West Chester Twp.; and Norman Grevey of Springboro, who all earned Division I college basketball scholarships; and daughters, Jill Hogan and Sarah Long, both of Chicago.

“I can’t imagine another family that had four boys like that, and two daughters who were equally successful,” Allen said.

Mr. Grevey, a retired Hamilton attorney, graduated from Hamilton Catholic High School in 1948 and was named valedictorian. He played on the Rams basketball team that went to the state finals in 1948.

Mr. Grevey was inducted into the Badin High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008.

He graduated from Xavier University with honors in 1952, from Chase Law School with honors in 1956 and joined the law firm of Brown, Kohler and Grevey.

During his years of practice he was active in the local and state bar associations, and in 1991 served as president of the Butler County Bar Association.

He suffered a stroke in May 1995 and retired.

His wife of 21 years, Mona, said that through rehabilitation he walked with a cane, but eventually, he needed a wheelchair.

“He had incredible kindness; he was compassionate; he was loving and sincere,” she said, adding, “(He was) the finest guy in the world. He loved everybody.”

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, Feb. 5, at Brown-Dawson Funeral Home, 330 Pershing Ave. A funeral Mass will follow with the Rev. Patrick Duffy officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery, 4030 Pleasant Ave.
