HAMILTON — Getting Flub’s Dari-Ette sherbet ice cream in the off season is no longer a problem.

The company has begun selling four of its 40 flavors in the Fairfield Kroger on Wessel Drive.

Brian Connaughton, owner of Flub’s, said he’s excited about the prospect of selling his product on a regional level. He hopes to soon be selling in five Kroger locations.

“We’re kind of a family tradition,” Connaughton said. “That, in token with using the best quality ingredients I can, keeps people coming back.”

Rachael Betzler, public relations manager for Kroger, said the company encourages local businesses to sell in their stores.

“We’re always looking for locally grown product,” Betzler said. “It helps out the community and customers like to support local businessmen.”

Four flavors and three sizes of the ice cream have been available in the store for two weeks now. Around 200 units have been sold so far, said Connaughton’s cousin Dan Graf, president of Watch-Us, Inc. in Fairfield.

“Sales have been outstanding,” Graf said, who’s been a seller to local Krogers for 20 years. “We’re all amazed.”

Graf said the year-long process of getting the ice cream onto shelves included taste-testing flavors in the store, sending the product to a laboratory to gather nutritional information, and shooting artwork.

The tubs of sherbert ice cream will also be sold in the two Flub’s locations — 997 Eaton Ave., Hamilton and at Symmes Tavern on the Green, 530 Wessel Drive, Fairfield once it opens for the season March 19.

The Hamilton location is also undergoing major changes, as Connaughton purchased the service station next door and is working on an expansion. The current location will eventually become a packaging center once the new location is complete around March 2012.

Connaughton said the new location will include outdoor seating for 200 and a 20-car lane drive-through.
