Engel: School board will need to address a ‘financial nightmare’

FAIRFIELD — Arnold Engel left his last scheduled Board of Education meeting with a few parting shots.

While he wished he was re-elected to the Fairfield School Board in November, Engel said he does “not envy” the board due to a “financial nightmare” it needs to address.

“The new board will have to deal with all-day kindergarten, that will cost an additional $1.5 million to implement,” said Engel, who’s term expires Dec. 31. “We are now in our second year of deficit spending that will require a new operating levy to be passed by no later than November of 2011.”

The board had an informal reception before the meeting, and presented a certificate to Engel for his four years of service at the end of the meeting.

Engel said there are some things he’d do differently, but wouldn’t elaborate. He is proud of his time, and the fact the board has adopted seven of his 34 ideas to save money.

Board President Jerome Kearns wished Engel the best in his future endeavors, which includes a possible run for an Ohio House of Representative seat in 2010 and the school board in 2012.

“Everyone knows we have different ideas about the best ways to accomplish our district’s goals,” Kearn said. “I think he should be recognized for his willingness to put himself forward as an elected official instead of just sitting home criticizing and complaining.”

Engel said he plans to still be active in Citizens for Accountability and Results in Education, which he founded.

Board members Dan Murray and Mark Morris won re-election in November and newcomer Sharon Ko will fill Engel’s seat in January.
