UPDATED @ 4:47 p.m.

The driver of a vehicle involved in a serious crash this afternoon in Middletown has died.

The female driver, whose identity was not released, was pronounced dead at Atrium Medical Center after being removed from the crash that happened at Lafayette Avenue and Verity Parkway, according to a Middletown spokeswoman.

The crash was reported at about 1:15 p.m. today at Lafayette Avenue and Verity Parkway. A box truck traveling north on Verity struck the deceased driver’s vehicle, which was traveling west on Lafayette, and it then went into the path of a semi truck traveling south on Verity.

Crews were continuing to work on getting a victim out of the vehicle as of 1:40 p.m. The victim was out of the vehicle by 1:55 p.m., and the victim was taken away from the scene in an ambulance.

A witness said the driver of the box truck ran a red light at the corner of Lafayette and Verity and crashed into the Ford. The witness said the Ford then was sandwiched between the box truck and a semi truck that was sitting at the red light.

She got out of her vehicle and said the female driver of the Ford was conscious, but unresponsive.

“It was very, very heart wrenching,” the witness said.

Verity Parkway is expected to reopen around 5 p.m. today, according to city officials.

The woman’s identity is being withheld until her family is notified.
