Art exhibit aims to promote healing at McCullough-Hyde

OXFORD — McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital is reaching out to area artists for the fourth time to partner in creating a healing environment for patients and families through the annual “Healing Art” exhibit.

Artists within a 100-mile radius of McCullough-Hyde are invited to submit work for the annual juried art show, which will result in the selection of approximately 60 original pieces of art to be displayed throughout the hospital for a year, beginning in mid-April.

“Research shows that original art work in a healthcare setting enhances the environment and promotes healing,” said Bryan Hehemann, McCullough-Hyde CEO. “It also comforts and delights patients, visitors, and staff. In addition, research demonstrates that patients who view art recover more quickly.”

A “Call for Entries” brochure was recently sent to artists within a 100-mile radius of Oxford, with a submission deadline of March 10. The show will be jurored by Dennis and Muriel Foster, a husband and wife team from Landen, Ohio. Trained as a cinematographer and photographer, Dennis’ media is still photography, while Muriel combines a passion for photography with teaching. She has taught photography at the University of Cincinnati for 13 years and maintains a studio/gallery in Loveland. The Fosters will work with a committee of hospital staff and volunteers to select up to seven works from the exhibit for Purchase Awards. These pieces will be purchased by the hospital and other donors to become part of its permanent collection, and remain on display throughout the show.

Local artist and teacher Jean Vance is helping McCullough-Hyde manage the Healing Art Exhibit and is especially pleased that jurored artwork in the exhibit will be eligible for $5,000 in Purchase Awards.

“Not only will area artists be able to display and sell their work to a large, new audience, they’ll have the opportunity to compete for the Purchase Awards,” Vance said.

Local artists who are interested in submitting their work may contact Vance at jeanvanceartist@msn.com or 513-284-9609. Those interested in sponsoring a Purchase Award should contact Julie Nickell at 513-664-3850, or jnickell@mhmh.org.

A Healing Art Exhibit Opening Reception for the public and to introduce the artists and their work is scheduled for May 2, 2014 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
