Go-kart scalping mishap prompts safety review

A portion of a woman’s scalp and hair was ripped out by a go-kart ride gone awry, according to state officials.

The incident occurred when a patron’s hair became ensnared in the rear axle of a go-kart at The Web Extreme Entertainment in Liberty Twp., according to Brett Gates, spokesman for the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s Division of Amusement Ride Safety, which is investigating the incident.

An employee of The Web called 911 for help at 10:21 p.m., according to the Butler County Dispatch Center.

“Someone had an accident on the track and she’s bleeding in her face, and we were going to see if somebody could come out here,” he told a dispatchers, who asked what happened.

“I’m not sure,” the employee said. “I was up near the front. She was racing on the track in the go-carts, and I think they hit the wall and something came up and hit her.”

The injured woman, who was described by the employee as “a teenager or a younger kid,” is listed in a fire department report as a 24-year-old, according to Liberty Twp. Fire Chief Paul Stumpf.

Liberty Twp. life squad transported her to University of Cincinnati Medical Center to be treated for non life-threatening injuries, Stumpf said.

The Web’s owner, Jerry Weber, said he could not speak to the Journal-News about the incident but agreed to send a written statement via email.

“We were saddened to learn that one of our patrons was injured while visiting The Web,” he said in the statement. “Our thoughts are with the injured party, and we certainly hope that she makes a full and speedy recovery.”

One sign at the business warns riders that “all loose clothing and hair longer than shoulder length must be secured” while another warns that “hair must be done up above the shoulders.”

“The safety of our patrons is The Web’s top priority, and we make every effort to make sure that the attractions operate correctly and all safety rules are followed by employees and participants,” Weber said. “We are reviewing all aspects of this unfortunate event and will take the steps that we determine are necessary to avoid similar injuries in the future.”
