Last month, the board of education put the demolition project up for bid, but that bid has not been awarded yet. That will likely happen at this month’s board meeting, on Aug. 26, with the actual demolition occurring sometime in October, Lantz said.
The project will be broken up into two segments: one for asbestos removal and one for the actual demolition. All told, the projects will cost an estimated $300,000, with the Ohio School Facilities Commission paying for half of the cost, Lantz said.
The part of Bloomfield facing Miami Street is the old Trenton High School, first constructed in 1910. An addition was built in the 1950s, with the buildings joined by a connector. The older part of the building was last in use two years ago, and the addition one year ago, Lantz said. The buildings were reconfigured after the new high school opened.
The board wanted to avoid a repeat of what happened with the former Wayne High School, which sat vacant for years. In that case, the district no longer owned the building, and the new owner took a long time to demolish it, Lantz said.
Babeck Elementary is the one Edgewood school remaining in the Trenton city limits.
