FBI: Middletown restaurant website hack similar to others

An agent with the Cincinnati Bureau of the FBI said there are similarities between the latest website hack in Middletown to those reported earlier this year in the region.

On Saturday, the website for The Canal House Bar and Grille, 14 S. Broad St., was hacked by a group claiming to support the Islamic State.

Jay Moorman, co-owner of the Middletown restaurant, said he had “no clue” how the website was hacked. At first, he thought fixing the problem would be “simple,” but as of Monday, the website (www.canalhousebar.com) was still hacked.

The landing page on the Middletown restaurant’s site displays the same black screen that reads “Hacked by Team System Dz” and an Arabic song.

Several area business websites have been hacked this year, including Montgomery Inn, Moerlein Lager House, My Fountain Square, Washington Park and 3CDC.

Agent Rick Smith said the FBI was aware of the Middletown attack, but it was too early in the investigation to determine whether it was committed possibly by the same individuals. To make that connection would be purely “speculative,” he said.

When asked how businesses can keep their sites secure, Smith said they should check their software vulnerability.

Jamie Murphy, the other co-owner of the Canal House, said she was aware of the hack and that it was under investigation.

The restaurant posted a message Monday that in part read: “Unlike the website, the bar is fully operational and looking forward to seeing you soon!” and said the site was hacked by “some pretty malicious people.”
