OSHP received a call of a crash on Interstate 75 near mile marker 18 in West Chester Twp. Troopers arrived on scene and were assisted by West Chester Police and determined the crash involved three vehicles and confirmed that two individuals involved had sustained fatal injuries.
The crash remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol Reconstruction Unit.
UPDATE@11:40 a.m.: The West Chester Police Department received at least seven 911 calls minutes after I-75 froze over and several accidents were reported, including a double fatal.
One caller said: “I’m in shock.”
He said there were several accidents on northbound I-75 near the Union Center Boulevard at 5 a.m. today.
“I wasn’t expecting that,” he told the dispatcher.
Another caller said he witnessed the accident and when the dispatcher said it was a fatality, the man said: “Of my God.” Then he started crying.
The callers said the bridge near Union Centre was “a sheet of ice” and cars were spinning out of control.
“It was insane,” another 911 caller said.
Later he added: “I feel like I’m in shock.”
INITIAL REPORT
The State Highway Patrol is investigating a double fatal accident this morning on Interstate 75 in West Chester, one of the many accidents blamed on winter weather.
The accident closed northbound I-75 near Union Centre Boulevard around 5 a.m. and the lanes now are reported open.
The Butler County Coroner’s Office was called to the accident.
Several other accidents on I-75 and I-71 were reported this morning after a burst of scattered showers dumped ice and snow across the region.
