Hamilton police are investigating vandalism at a local apartment complex after the manager of the complex caught two people on security video breaking out the windows of a tenant’s car.

After a few residents at an apartment complex located in the 300 block of Main Street began complaining recently to James Maxwell, who manages the apartments, he decided to install security cameras to see if he could catch the vandals.

With the green light given by the landlord of the property, Maxwell said he “hooked up security cameras in the last few months” inside and outside of the apartment building.

Officer Kristy Collins of the Hamilton Police Department said there were a couple of calls from the complex regarding vandalism, with the last one being on March 20, but she noted that there has not been a rash of crimes reported.

The March 20 report came from Michael Collier, who told police that his car windows had been damaged by someone who had thrown rocks through them.

Maxwell said he installed the cameras to catch people in the act of committing the crimes.

“You can see these kids in broad daylight run in the lot and hit the car with rocks,” he said. “I hope they get caught and somebody turns them in.”

Hamilton police have used the phrase “see something, say something” to encourage people with information about any type of crime to step forward with information so they can make arrests. Social media and supplying videos or tips have also been helpful, according to Collins.

Taking action like installing security cameras and making sure your car is locked and your home is secure are important for safety, Collins added.

Maxwell said he plans on making sure the apartment complex security system stays in place in the hope that it will deter crime.

Anyone with information about the vandalism is being asked to call police at 513-868-5811, ext. 1200.
