Body pulled from Great Miami River believed to be missing kayaker

Search crews pulled a body Tuesday afternoon from the Great Miami River that is believed to be a man who has been missing since his kayak capsized this past weekend.

Since Sunday, local, county and state departments have been searching the river in Hamilton for Benjamin Gipson, 29, of Cincinnati.

Hamilton firefighters were first called to the river south of the High/Main Street bridge at about 3:10 p.m. Sunday and found one man — Wilbur Strobel, 35 — in the water clinging to a capsized kayak and calling for help.

A passing jet skier rescued Strobel, who was treading water, but found no sign of Gipson's body, according to Hamilton firefighters.

The body found Tuesday will be taken to the Butler County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy and to make a positive identification, according to Hamilton Fire Deputy Chief Ken Runyan.
