Addiction services increase in Hamilton

Mental health and addiction services are again expanding in Butler County to add a greater capacity for safe drug detox from heroin and other opiates.

Modern Psychiatry and Wellness LLC — with an office in West Chester Twp. — has opened its Hamilton Center, at 25 North F St., for adult services including medically-assisted detox and intensive outpatient therapy, said Dr. Quinton Moss, board certified in psychiatry and family practice.

The office, which opened June 16, is the first phase of Moss’ expansion into Hamilton, he said. Moss is also renovating a nearby residence at 529 Park Avenue that will be dubbed “Victory House” where group therapy sessions will be held starting in August or September.

Moss said after a patient is assessed, examined and has labs completed, they start a combination of low-dose drugs, including Suboxone and Vivitrol, to counteract the opioid dependence.

“Most folks coming in don’t just solely have a struggle with addiction,” Moss said of a focus on dual diagnosis, such as addiction along with depression or anxiety.

The treatment program also includes cognitive behavioral therapy; motivational interviewing techniques; individual therapy; and intensive outpatient therapy — in a group setting — about three times a week before stepping down to weekly continuing care therapy sessions.

Moss said he selected Hamilton for his second location due to 40-50 percent of his clients in West Chester coming from the Hamilton area. He also serves as medical director of Fort Hamilton Hospital’s behavioral health services.

“The need out here is huge,” Moss said, especially for those without transportation.

The Hamilton location, with seven employees, has the capacity for up to 10 people a day for detox treatments.

The office — open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday — can be reached at 513-795-7557. The community is invited to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony and tour of the office at 2 p.m. June 25.

The number of drug-related deaths in Butler County reached 50 in the first three months of the year, according to the Butler County Coroner’s Office. That’s nearly a 140 percent jump over the same time in 2013.

The nonprofit Sojourner Recovery Services also provides residential substance abuse treatment by the way of 82 beds in Butler County — 24 beds for men; 42 for women; and 16 for adolescents.

There are an additional 48 beds at the Beckett Springs hospital that opened last July in West Chester Twp.

As well, the Butler County Care Facility is working toward becoming a sub-acute detox center to medically assist patients through withdrawal before moving to Sojourner for the rehabilitation, said Chuck Demidovich, administrator for Butler County Care Facility.

“It’s a couple months down the road but we definitely know there’s a need for it out there,” Demidovich said, adding the agency is working toward discussion of the intake process and remodel of the building to establish a secure wing.
