Waynesville man treated for flesh-eating bacteria

A Warren County man treated in Dayton for a rare flesh-eating bacteria after a Florida fishing trip today said it could be months before he can go outside and rehab his leg.

Barry Briggs of Wayne Twp. said he was visiting family in Tampa in March when he became sick after a boat trip, according to a story first reported by our news partners at WCPO-TV. Briggs said his foot started to swell but he was able to make his flight home to Ohio, according to the WCPO report.

Briggs spent 11 days in Miami Valley Hospital, undergoing skin grafts and treatment with antibiotics.

“Everything’s going really good,” Briggs said this morning. “I can put a little weight on it.”

He said he hoped to be able to begin going outside and rehabbing the leg muscles in July.

Doctors diagnosed Briggs with necrotizing fasciitis, known for eating away a person’s flesh and considered to be life threatening.
