This gourmet Tabasco sauce will set tongues and wallets on fire

The famous maker of Tabasco sauce just released a limited-edition, small-batch pepper sauce to commemorate its 150th anniversary -- and it's pricey.

McIlhenny, the company made famous for its fiery red condiment, hopes its Tabasco Diamond Reserve Sauce, with its flashy, champagne-style bottle, will catch the eye.

And at $35 a pop, it might cost as much as your favorite bottle of bubbly.

But the new sauce is a must for hot sauce fans and collectors.

Tabasco Diamond Reserve Sauce is made from select tabasco peppers on Avery Island that are mashed with salt and aged for up to 15 years then blended with sparkling white wine vinegar.

The result is a concentrated, complex hot sauce that maintains the signature vibrancy Tabasco fans love, the company said.

The sauce is a celebratory offering that toasts the chefs, home cooks, bartenders and foodies who have made Tabasco a staple in their kitchens for the last 150 years.

“We have reached this milestone anniversary thanks to our devoted fans who have championed Tabasco Sauce in kitchens and at dining tables, in restaurants and in handbags, and from Avery Island, Louisiana to every corner of the world,” said Tony Simmons, CEO of McIlhenny and a fifth-generation McIlhenny family member.

A 6-ounce bottle of Tabasco Diamond Reserve Sauce costs $34.95 and is sold at the company's website. Supplies are limited.

McIlhenny's 150th festivities will continue with special birthday bashes held throughout the year in New York City, London and Shanghai. Fans will be invited to these pop-up Tabasco Global Kitchen events in select cities to enjoy street-eats and drinks from around the world.

Simmons is also sharing a recipe for the Diamond Reserve Bloody Mary, which puts a celebratory twist on the classic brunch cocktail with the addition of chili seasoning, black and white sesame seeds, sesame oil and dry prosecco.
